PURPOSE:To easily form a two dimensional histogram without using a special histogram buffer by using the third picture storing area as a histogram buffer to form the two dimensional histogram. CONSTITUTION:When the space coordinate of a picture stored in a picture memory is defined to be (x, y), the (x), (y) take the digital value of 0<=x<=xmax, 0<=y<=ymax. When the first and the second pictures which should take the two dimensional histogram, namely, the density values of the first and the second pictures 1, 2 are respectively defined to be uxy, vxy correspondingly to the space coordinate (x, y), the uxy, vxy is also the digital value satisfying 0<=uxy<=umax, 0<=vxy<=vmax. For instance if the uxy, vxy is represented as the picture of 8 bits, umax=vmax=255 is obtained. At this time, with respect to the set of the density value (uxy, vxy), a rectangular area formed by making it the set (uxy, vxy) of the space coordinate is taken within the area of the third picture of a picture memory, namely the picture 3 and this is used as the histogram buffer.
