NEW MATERIAL:A rhodanineacetic acid derivative expressed by formula I (R<1> is 1-4C alkyl; R<2> is H or 1-4C alkyl) and nontoxic salt thereof. EXAMPLE:3-Carboxymethyl-5-(3-ethoxycarbonyl-2-propenylidene)rhodanine. USE:An aldose reductase inhibitor expected as a preventive and treating agent for diabetic complications. PREPARATION:For example, an alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde expressed by formula II is reacted with a rhodanine-3-acetic acid expressed by formula III in a polar solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide, acetic acid, etc., in the presence of a base, e.g. sodium acetate, etc., while heating to afford the aimed rhodanine derivative expressed by formula I.
