PURPOSE:To print an underline as attractive as an underline printed in the case of a wide line space, even in the case of a narrow line space, by driving a printing means under control based on a character data group stored in a first storage means, and printing the underline while changing the spacing between an underline-printing position and a character to be underlined in accordance with printing line space data stored in a second storage means. CONSTITUTION:A character data group for one printing line in document data stored in a document memory 33 are transferred to a working memory 34, and a CPU 31 drives a printing head 27 and a carriage-driving motor 37 under control, thereby printing on a printing paper. When it is judged by the CPU 31 that underline data is contained in the character data group for one line and a line space D2 is not more than a preset value Ds, the CPU 31 drives a paper feed driving motor 40 under control so as to print an underline 2 in a lower space D1 for the characters 1 to be underlined, whereby a printing paper is fed, and the underline 2 is printed for the characters 1. When the line space D2 is extremely narrow, the underline 2 is printed, or overprinted, at a position coinciding with the lowermost printing position of the printed characters 1 to be underlined.
