摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a ferroelectric liquid crystal element having fast response characteristic and memory effect characteristic by providing granular spacers having a predetermined grain size to between substrates, rubbing an electrode surface side on the substrate, and shearing at least one substrates perpendicularly to the direction of rubbing in a stage of growth of a liquid crystal during cooling. CONSTITUTION:The substrate 21 is rubbed in a fixed direction by shifting a rubbing cloth in a rubbing direction 22, and granular spacers 23 having a specified particle size are scattered uniformly on the rubbed substrate 21. Then, one of the substrates 24 provided with an upper electrode is disposed so as to face the electrode surfaces oppositely to each other, and ferroelectric liquid crystals 25 are injected through a gap between the substrates and filled in a space between the substrates. At least one of the substrate 21 or 24 is (are) sheared in a fixed direction 26 perpendicular to the direction of the rubbing in the stage of growing the liquid crystal during cooling of this element from an isotropic liquid phase state. Thus, fast response characteristic and memory effect characteristic are displayed sufficiently.
