1. Zirconium dioxide powder which has optionally been stabilised, and a process for its preparation. 2.1 In the processes carried out to date for the preparation of the zirconium dioxide powders, the use of aqueous solutions and the isolation of precipitates are substantial disadvantages. In addition, these products often do not have the desired flow, compression and sinter properties, owing to an inhomogeneous stabiliser distribution and the presence of large crystallites and agglomerates. 2.2 An optionally stabilised zirconium dioxide powder having good properties is obtained, while avoiding the disadvantageous process measures, by a method in which zirconyl chloride and optionally a stabiliser or its precursor are melted in the presence of ammonium chloride, the melt is evaporated to dryness by evaporating off water and hydrogen chloride, the ammonium chloride is removed by sublimation and the reaction product is calcined at elevated temperatures and the residue is optionally milled. 2.3 The zirconium dioxide powder is suitable for the production of sintered bodies which can be exposed to high mechanical and/or thermal loads. |
