The distorting component is particularly for a motor vehicle, and comprises a hollow beam (1) and a tubular distorting portion of smaller dismeter, supported from the beam by an external flange (3-5). Thus under a force of predetermined value on the lengthwise axis the component is shortened by thrusting the distorting portion inside the beam. This portion (2) tapers away from the beam, which distorts so as to form one or more folds (9) bearing against the distorting portion when this is thrust inside it. There can also be an external flange on the beam, joined to that of the distorting portion. ADVANTAGE - Largely absorbs kinetic energy, and also effective for a limited angle from the lengthwise axis.
