An automated press line is equipped with short distance workpiece transfer devices to place workpieces into presses, and then to remove them after completion of the pressing operation. Each press has a first transfer device (1) or (1') which places the workpiece in the press and a second transfer device (2) (2') removes the workpiece and transfers it to the next press. The gripper rails of the input transfer device of each press are offset either in the horizontal or in the vertical plane with respect to the gripper rails of the corresponding output transfer device.
