The linear motor has a stator (14) and a relatively displaced rotor (12), one of the two parts exhibiting a magnetically conductive yoke (22) with at least two elongate arms (16, 18) extending parallel to the direction of movement of the rotor (12), at least one of which carries an electrical winding (24, 26). The second of the two parts is formed of a soft magnetic material and provides a coupling between the parallel yoke arms (16,18), a second coupling provided between the latter by a soft magnetic perpendicular core limb (20). Pref. the electrical winding (24, 26) has a variable winding density along its longitudinal axis to obtain a required transparent profile. ADVANTAGE - Suitable for AC or DC operation.
