Separator for the treatment of a liquid in particular contg. particles comprises: thin plates each of which have a concave face, a convex face and two circular edges of which one is peripheral and the other central defining a circular cutout. These items are packed approximately coaxially relative to each other and held by a device such as a bracing assembly, at a defined spacing with their concave faces turned upwards; and a container with a cylindrical wall and a base which contains the plates and forms a vessel both to contain the liquid passing between the concave and convex faces of the plates and to store the particles which are precipitated onto the concave faces and move towards the base of the vessel via the cut-outs. This container also has at least one inlet for the flow of liquid and at least one exit for the treated liquid. The device is characterised in that it comprises connected to the inlet to the container, means to distribute the liquid between the plates in directions tangential to a circle centred on the longitudinal axis of the assembly, and connected to the exit for treated liquid, means to remove the liquid from between the plates at predetermined points and to pipe it towards the exit.
