The invention concerns a method of operating a continuous casting plant (10) having a continuous casting machine which comprises a stationary mould (11) and is connected to a soaking pit furnace (50) via a roller table (21). When the slab format has been determined at the mould outlet, of the casting parameters at least the casting speed is set such that the slab, on entering the soaking pit (50), has the desired rolling temperature for the hot strip to be produced, and the tip (F) of the liquid phase is always in the mouth regi on of the continuous casting machine. Measures are taken in order to influence the thermal energy content of the slab when it has left the continuous casti ng machine. The invention further concerns the continuous casting machine used for this purpose.
