The device includes at least one pair of linear light sensor arrangements, which each consist of several sensor elements for producing an image of the vehicle passenger. There is a unit (101, 102, 103) for the measurement of a distance distribution of the image of the vehicle passenger, within at least one linear visual field. The presence and body posture of the vehicle passenger is determined through comparison of the distance distribution with stored model patterns. At least two pairs of light sensor arrangements are preferably provided, in which at least one pair defines a visual field in a predetermined position in a horizontal direction.
