The piston blank is forged and its shaft (7) forged or cast as against the cooling channel (6) which is machined. The top edge of the shaft reaches almost to the bottom edge of the piston crown (2) and one shaft at least (7) should be welded to the piston bosses, specifically to the boss webs (8). It is possible for the shaft to have webs to be welded to the piston bosses and the completed weld necessarily includes the piston bore (4). With the piston as a cylindrical component, this takes the piston bosses inside.
