PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize both of a premix combustion zone and a diffusion combustion zone. SOLUTION: This diesel engine in which switching between the premix combustion and the diffusion combustion is performed depending on a driving zone, comprises an oxygen concentration/oxygen amount regulating means capable of regulating the oxygen concentration and the oxygen amount in a gas sucked in a cylinder; a target value setting means (blocks 5, 6) for setting optimal oxygen amount target value and oxygen concentration target value for each of the premix combustion and diffusion combustion, depending on a driving condition; and a combustion state determining means (block 5) for determining whether the premix combustion or diffusion combustion is carried out under a current driving condition; and a means (blocks 7, 8, 9 and 10) for controlling the oxygen concentration/oxygen amount regulating means so that the optimal oxygen target value and oxygen concentration target value are obtained for the current driving condition set by the target value setting means in the combustion state determined by the combustion state determining means. |
