PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve problems of conventional deflecting elements, that is, high cost and a large size of the device, loss in the light quantity and optical noise accompanied by complicated structures and to obtain a device which is small in size and low-cost and which has a simple structure and little loss in the light quantity, optical noise and decrease in the resolution. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a pair of transparent substrates 2, 3, a liquid crystal 5 composed of a chiral smectic-C phase forming homeotropic alignment and sealed between the substrates 2, 3, and at least one group of an electric field applying means 6 to allow an electric field to effect the liquid crystal 5. By using the liquid crystal 5 composed of the chiral smectic-C phase, problems of high cost, large size of the device, loss in the light quantity and optical noise accompanied by a complicated structure can be improved compared to a conventional deflecting element. Further, slow response in a conventional smectic-A liquid crystal or a nematic liquid crystal is improved and fast response can be obtained. |
