PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for flash butt welding, used for a building work and a civil work, etc. SOLUTION: In the flash butt welding apparatus for welding steel materials with heat generated at butted part by butting both steel materials and supplying electric power into these steel materials, the flash butt welding apparatus is provided with electrodes for supplying the current by contacting the respective steel materials, an electrode attaching/detaching device for contacting or attaching/detaching the electrodes with the steel materials, a clamping member for holding the steel materials while positioning at the farther side (outside) from the butted part of the steel materials than a distance from the electrode and a pressing force control unit for controlling the butting force (pressing force) of the steel materials.
