A liquid crystal display having an optical compensation ability of solving the phase difference problem caused when multicolor displaying is carried out using a color filter is provided. A method for easily manufacturing the liquid crystal display with high quality is also provided. A color filter substrate comprises a substrate, a color filter layer provided on the substrate, and a black matrix provided on the substrate. The color filter substrate is characterized in that the color filter layer has multiple pixels of two or more colors, a liquid crystal compound layer is provided under or over the color filter layer having an optical anisotropy, and the liquid crystal compound can make optical compensation. The liquid crystal display is characterized in that a liquid crystal material is held between the color filter substrate and another substrate opposed to the color filter substrate.
