A lifting beam, comprising: a first and a second beam element each formed from a composite material, wherein the first and second beam elements are arranged in an opposed spaced relationship such that a clearance gap is formed therebetween; a plurality of plate elements mounted to the first and second beam elements within the clearance gap; wherein one or more of the plurality of plate elements provide a first connection arrangement for connecting the lifting beam to a lifting apparatus; wherein one or more of the plurality of plate elements provide a second connection arrangement for connecting the lifting beam to a load; wherein the plurality of plate elements are secured to the first and second beam elements by an adhesive, wherein the adhesive is applied to contact surfaces of each of the plurality of plate elements, and wherein the contact surfaces are positioned within the clearance gap; further comprising a sensor mounted to one of the first or second beam elements; wherein the sensor is a visual indicator configured to provide a visual indication of a stress loading of the one of the first or second beam elements; and wherein the visual indicator comprises a sticker providing a color indication of loading.
