The present invention relates to a farnesoid X receptor (FXR) agonist closely associated with fatty liver disease, containing bellflower root-derived saponin or a bellflower root extract containing the bellflower root-derived saponin as an active ingredient. The composition of the present invention acts as the FXR agonist, inhibits lipogenesis, and promotes fatty acid oxidation, thereby exhibiting outstanding effects of suppressing neutral fat accumulation in liver tissues. Thus, the composition can be useful as functional health foods for ameliorating fatty liver disease and compositions for preventing and treating fatty liver disease.
