PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dye compound that can stein cells, has a water solubility, has a good light emission efficiency, and has a characteristic of transferring the localization location from mitochondria to nucleus depending on the mitochondrial membrane potential.SOLUTION: Provided are: a compound represented by the following formula (1); a fluorescent dye composition containing said compound; a method for detecting change in mitochondrial membrane potential by using said compound; and a method for discriminating life or death of cells by using said compound.
