PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately brake a motor.SOLUTION: A control device for a synchronous machine comprises: a power conversion circuit (40) that modulates a DC voltage (Ed) outputted from a DC power supply (3, 4) and supplies the modulated DC voltage to a synchronous machine (30) for driving a load (50), and that can operate at least in any one operation mode of a first mode (a clamp mode) where the synchronous machine (30) is braked or a second mode (a regeneration mode) where power generation by a torque generated by the load (50) is performed and regeneration to the DC power supply (3, 4) is performed; and a controller (6) that arbitrarily designates any one of the first and second modes (the clamp mode and the regeneration mode) as the operation mode, depending on the DC voltage (Ed).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
