Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1107733/C2/1> wherein A is the radical -CH2-CH2- or -CH=CH-, X is iodine, Y is H or iodine, and R is H, alkyl, aryl, bromo-aryl, carboxylic acyl or aralkyl, the R groups being the same or different, may be prepared from the compound <FORM:1107733/C2/2> by iodination, e.g. with KI solution, with optional steps of reducing the olefinic bond, and/or etherifying or acylating the OH groups. Therapeutic compositions having estrogenic and growth-promoting activity comprise a compound of the first formula given above, together with a suitable diluent, and may take the form of a feed, or an injection suspension, e.g. in peanut oil.
