Fluid to be filtered is pumped into a sealed chamber 10 divided into two compartments 28, 42 by a perforated plate 31 with which is juxtaposed a filter medium sheet 34; after filtration, a fluid pressure differential is created across the sheet 34 to lift it from plate 31; this facilitates changing the sheet. The apparatus comprises means (e.g. 71, 72) for advancing the filter sheet 34 over plate 31. As described, filter sheet 34 (which may be of paper fibres having carbon particles therebetween) is intermittently drawn off a roll 65 by driven rollers 71, 72: a doctor blade 75 removes filter residue. To filter, doors 48 are closed by rams 56 to seal the chamber and a pump (14) (Fig. 2, not shown) delivers the liquid to top compartment 28 through a top plate 27. The plate 31 has a number of parallel grooves 32 in it, at the bottom of which lie drainage holes 33, see also Figs. 5-7 (not shown), through which the liquid enters lower compartment 42 from which it is pumped via a conduit 43. The filtration is aided at a suitable stage by pressurising compartment 28 by means of a conduit (79), Figs. 2, 3 (not shown). After filtration, doors 48 are opened and compressed air is directed via conduit 43 into compartment 42 to levitate the filter sheet 34, whereupon roll 71 is driven. The inner walls and plate 31 of chamber 10 may be plastics-lined. |
