An apparatus 10 for applying a strip of reinforcing material to a sheet comprises a conveyer 80 for conveying successive sheets through the apparatus, rollers 432, 396 for applying the strip material 446 to a predetermined area of each of the sheets and means driven by belt 208 for shearing the material adjacent one edge of each of the sheets. In the apparatus paper sheets are conveyed to a strip applying section where a continuous strip of plastic reinforcing material 446 is glued from an inverted glue jar 423 along one edge with the results that the sheets are temporarily connected together. As the sheets continue through the machine a cut-off guide finger picks up the location of the joint between the adjacent sheets and causes a pair of rotating shearing knives to cut the strip of reinforcing material at the joint, thereby separating the sheets. A pull-out roller assembly conveys the sheets from the apparatus to a delivery tray. The strip 446 may be covered with a heatactivated adhesive in which case the rollers 432, 396 will incorporate heating means and the glue mechanism will be omitted. |
