[Also in Division F1] In an engine valve timing control system the crank-shaft 11 and cam-shaft 17 are connected by chain and sprocket gearing 12, 13, 16, the sprocket 16 having a spline connection 36 with a disc 21 connected by a ball spline joint 56 with a second disc 39 secured to cam-shaft 17. Ball 56 engages straight and helical splines 53, 52 in annular members 38, 51 secured to discs 39, 21. A chamber 57 formed between the discs is supplied with pressure oil through passages 61, 66 under the control of a follow-up spool valve 76 actuated by a fork 82 connected by a linkage (103, 116) to a servo piston (99) in the engine manifold (97), Fig. 1 (not shown). Actuation of the piston and valve 76 result in axial movement of disc 21 and conjoint rotation of disc 39 to vary the phasing of cam-shaft 17. |
