1296525 Collapsible steering columns CAM GEARS Ltd 27 Nov 1969 [28 Nov 1968] 56448/68 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] A collapsible steering column comprises upper 3 and lower 2 portions of a telescopic steering shaft 1 normally retained in an extended condition by the interengagement of both parts of the shaft by a shear pin 4, the shaft being surrounded by upper 8 and lower 7 portions of a telescopic tubular casing 6 which portions are mounted on the shaft portions by bearings 10, 14 at each end. The casing portions are mounted in a firewall 18 at the lower end and in a mounting 21 fixed to a bracket of the instrument panel of the vehicle such that on collapse of the steering column due to the impact at either end of it the outer casing portion can move relatively to its mounting. The mounting 21 may include preloaded balls or pegs which indent the casing portion 8 and due to the resistance imposed when the casing is forced to move relative to the mounting it absorbs impact load imposed. Alternatively, the casing portions may be supported by rubber grommets. A ball and indentation arrangement may be provided between the upper and lower portions of the casing. |
