Prodn. of pure human albumin from haemo-pigment-contng. solns. by fractionating the solns., separating the albumin fraction (contng. alpha- and beta-globulins), adding salts to this fraction to give an ionic strength of 0.2-0.6, adding EtOH at 0 to -6 deg.C. until its concn. in the soln. is 30-50 vol. %, adjusting the aqs. alcoholic soln. to pH 6.0-6.8, separating off the resulting precipitate of the globulins and haemopigments, and isolating the desired product. The process enables pure albumins (at least 97% pure according to electrophoresis) suitable for medicinal purposes to be isolated from solns. contng. any amount of haemopigments. Suitable starting materials include retroplacental serum, placenta extract and haemolysed blood plasma.
