Prepn. of microporous fibrous foil comprises introducing a fibrous material selected from fibrous sheet, tissue material ro knitted material, into a solution consisting of a solvent and one or more polymerisable monomers, cooling the solution to solidification, polymerising the monomers and removing non-polymerised components. Specif. the solvent is a cyclic hydrocarbon for use in construction of mercury vapour lamps.
