RmMXp is reacted with inert (pref. Al2O3 or SiO2) carrier with a hydroxylic surface free from adsorbed water; M is a transition metal from groups IIA to VIA, R is an opt. substd. hydrocarbon, X is a monovalent ligand, m and p are whole numbers m varying from 2 to the max. valency of M, p is 0 to 2 less than the M valency, except that p = o if M is a group VIA metal. These catalysts are used to (co)polymerise olefinic monomers (part. ethylene, propylene, 4-methylpentene-1, butadiene). Pref. M: Ti, Zr, Hf, Cr; X = Cl, Br. High- or low-pressure processes may be used.
