1325564 Apparatus for coating with metals CONTINENTAL OIL CO 21 Aug 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 40478/70 Heading C7F Apparatus for continuous application of metallic coatings on to elongated flexible substrates comprises a housing containing an induction heating coil and a rinsing chamber, means for feeding the substrate material into and out of the housing, means for guiding the substrate material in sequence through the heating coil and through the rinsing chamber and means for spraying the substrate material with a plating solution during passage through said heating coil. The plating solution comprises a thermally decomposable metallic compound and an inert hydrocarbon solvent having a boiling point lower than the decomposition temperature of said compound, so that as the substrate passes further through the coil after spraying, the solvent evaporates and then the compound decomposes to give a coating of metal. The substrate may be a steel wire or strip and the coating metal Al, e.g. applied from a solution in a hydrocarbon of an alkyl AiRR<SP>1</SP> 2 where R = C 1 -C 30 alkyl and R<SP>1</SP> = R or H, or Zn applied from an organo-compound such as a zinc dialkyl. Prior to coating, the strip may be cleaned and prepared for coating by passage though a solvent such as kerosene, which is removed by evaporation prior to coating; the rinsing solvent may also be a hydrocarbon such as kerosene, and the spray-plating may be followed by immersion plating in a similar solution to that used for spraying. |
