Azo-di-isobutyric acid amidine of the formula is prepared by reacting a salt of (I) with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide at between -15 and +25 deg.C, separating the free amidine, washing it with a polar solvent until practically free from water, and then drying. Azo-di-isobutyric acid amidine is polymerisation initiator. The amidine is stable on storage. Its use as a polymerisation initiator avoids the difficulties caused by the introduction of salts onto the polymerisation system.
