1,060,338. Making aerofoil blades; forging. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. July 22, 1965, No. 31347/65. Headings B3A and B3H. In the manufacture of an aerofoil blade having a portion 11 and an integral clapper portion 12, 13, Fig. 6 (not shown), a blade is first produced having a finished forged blade portion and a roughly forged clapper portion, Fig. 5 (not shown), and the latter is then finish forged without affecting the blade portion, in a split die having parts 35, 36, Fig. 8 (not shown), which are movable both longitudinal and transversely of the blade. A slug 14, Fig. 1 (not shown) of titanium or nickel base alloy is first extruded, Fig. 2 (not shown), then heated locally and upset at 20, Fig. 3 (not shown), by impact. The upset portion 20 is then preliminary forged into opposite stubs 22, 23, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the entire workpiece then forged between split die parts to finish the blade portion 11, roughly forge the clappers 12, 13 and provide locating end portions 24, 25, Fig. 5 (not shown). The blade is inserted in a split clamp 30, 31 with the pre-forged clappers located between lower die parts 35, 36 and replaceable upper die parts 40, 41. Die parts 35, 36 biased by springs 44, are mounted to move longitudinally of the blade by ram 43 to finish forge the clappers during which the die parts move apart transversely. Grooves such as 46, Fig. 9 (not shown), are provided in the clamp 30, 31 and in the die parts 35, 36 to receive flash. Thereafter the flash is removed, the root portion is machined and the end portions 24, 25 are removed. |
