Ecdysterone and/or the novel compound 5#- hydroxy-ecdysterone are extracted from the plant polypodium vulgare with an appropriate solvent and isolated from the extract by conventional procedures. A mixture of the two products thus obtained is separable by chromatography. Both products are said to exhibit moulting activity in insects.
