<p>1292981 Cutting by laser beam BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 16 Jan 1970 [24 Jan 1969] 4209/69 Headings B4B and B5E [Also in Division C1] A method of cutting a workpiece of glass or other frangible material includes the steps of directing at the workpiece a beam of radiant energy from a laser, and directing at the zone impinged upon by the beam a gas mixture comprising a minor proportion by volume of hydrogen and a major proportion by volume of other non-reactive gas. The non-reactive gas may be nitrogen or argon. Preferably the area of the workpiece upon which the gas stream is incident is larger than, and encloses, that zone of the workpiece on which the beam is incident.</p> |
