The invention comprises nickel alkoxides having the formula wherein R 1 represents methyl, propyl, n-butyl or isobutyl and each R represents hydrogen, halogen or an alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or alkylaryl group. These compounds may be prepared by reacting a 2,2<SP>1 </SP>- thiobisphenol containing the desired substituents R; a nickel salt e.g. chloride, bromide, iodide, acetate tetrahydrate or nitrate hexahydrate; a primary alcohol containing 1-4 carbon atoms and an alcohol soluble acid acceptor selected from ammonia, alkylamines containing 1-6 carbon atoms, arylamines containing 6-12 carbon atoms, pyridine, methylpyridine, and ethylpyridine, in an essentially non-aqueous medium comprising methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, isobutanol, dimethoxyethane, dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran or dimethylsulphoxide, and precipitating the nickel alkoxide thus produced from the medium. In the examples the following compounds are prepared by the above process: 2,2<SP>1 </SP>- thiobis- (4,6 - ditertiarybutyl - phenoxy nickel methoxide dimethanolate; 2,2<SP>1 </SP>- thiobis(4,6 - ditertiaryamylphenoxy nickel methoxide dimethanolate); 2,2<SP>1 </SP>- thiobis(4 - tertiarybutyl - 6- methylphenoxy nickel methoxide dimethanolate); 2,2<SP>1</SP> - thiobis(4 - methyl - 6 - tertiarybutylphenoxy nickel methoxide dimethanolate); 2,2<SP>1</SP> - thiobis(4,6 - dimethylphenoxy nickel methoxide dimethanolate);-2,2<SP>1</SP> - thiobis- (4 - octylphenoxy nickel methoxide dimethanolate); and 2,2<SP>1</SP> - thiobis(4,6 - dichlorophenoxy nickel methoxide dimethanolate). |
