PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To unneccesitate complicated operation accompanying data input by detecting handwriting data expressing a time change in the coodinates of a pen tip on a medical slip, recognizing characters based upon the handwriting data and storing the recognized character string as medical information data. SOLUTION: A reader 10 in a first medical examination/treatment receiving unit 102 detects handwriting data expressing a time change in the coordinates of a pen tip on a medical slip and sends the data to a central processing unit 104. A host computer 104a in the unit 104 executes character recognition based upon the sent handwriting data and returns the recognized character data to the unit 102. Then the host computer 104a stores the insurance number or the like of an insurance card in a data base 104b and sends the data of a new medical card to the unit 102 and a computer 102a issues a new medical card based upon the data of the medical card. Thereby complicated operation for data input can be made unnecessary.
