An alkali-soluble sulphonamide which is not a developer is used in the silver salt diffusion transfer process or in the process set out in Specification 1,131,238 (wherein an imagewise exposed water soluble silver salt and sensitizing dye is developed by contact with an unexposed silver halide emulsion in the presence of a developer and a silver halide solvent), to produce a silver image of increased density; the density without the sulphonamide being at most 1À9. The sulphonamide is preferably in the developer but may be present in the emulsion or the imagereceiving layer. The sulphonamide is preferably of formula RÀSO 2 .NH[(R 1 ) n-1 ÀNHÀSO 2 ] n-1 ÀR 2 where R is alkyl with 1-5 carbon atoms, aryl or beta-hydroxyethyl, R 1 is alkylene, m and n are 1 or 2, R 2 is hydrogen or alkyl when n is 1 and alkyl or aryl when n is 2. An integral emulsion (i.e. with the emulsion layer coated on the image receiving layer) may be used.</p> |
