Plug and socket connector for a telephone or ancillary equipment is of a universal type to avoid having a multiplicity of types for various equipments and applications. The universal socket has tag connectors to terminate the incoming cable, for individual coupling to spring contacts. The spring contacts in the socket connect with the contacts in the wall of the plug unit. When all is connected, the entire unit can be protected by a screw-on cover. The socket has retaining springs at the side to grip the plug and a guide channel to prevent incorrect orientation of the plug, and false connection. The plug has a similar guide to marry with the sockets channel.
