A screw having a combined driving socket, to enable it to be driven either by a cross-point driver or by a square driver has four vertical faces 30 that define a square recess 28 and four wings 34 extending diagonally across the corners of the square, each wing being defined by a pair of vertical side walls 36, 38 and an end wall 40. The end wall 40 has a nearly vertical deepest region 42 merging with a driving region 44 which slopes at about 261 DIVIDED 2 DEG to the vertical, and a relieving region 46 that slopes at more than 261 DIVIDED 2 DEG to the vertical. The three regions run into one another forming a smooth convex curve. When the square or cross-point driver engages drivingly in the socket it is spaced from the bottom 50 of the socket and when the square driver is engaged in the socket it is clear of the end wall 40 right down to the bottom of the end wall 40.
