Technique for the inspection of patterns as printed matter is moving in a rotary printing machine, and method and device for judging the quality of the print by storing reference data produced from a standard piece of printed matter in a memory and comparing it to the data produced by inspecting the printed matter at, for example, every picture element unit. The features of this inspection includes (1) the rewriting of the reference data by detecting the speed at which the printed matter is moving at the position in the lateral direction of a pattern when the data is being obtained, (2) setting the comparison level arbitrarily when comparing the data, and (3) comparing the data not only for every picture element unit, but also for all the elements making up the entire pattern, and all the picture elements arranged linearly along the direction of movement of the printed matter. |
