14a, 17a-bridged estratrienes useful in the treatment of estrogen deficiency and for birth control in mammals of the formula OR2 OR3 B A R1O wherein (a) OR3 is in a-position R1, R2 and R3, each independently are (i) hydrogen, (ii) -C-R4, in which R4 is an organic O radical with up to 11 carbon atoms as described in the specification; or (iii) -(CH2)n COOH, wherein n = 1-4; or (iv) R1 is benzyl, C1-C8 alkyl or C3-C5 cycloalkyl; or (b) OR3 is in b-position; R1, R2 and R3, each independently, are (i) hydrogen, (ii) C1-C12 acyl, or (iii) R1 is C1-C8 alkyl, and in both (a) and (b) A-B is an etheno or ethano bridge.
