PURPOSE:To recognize visually and easily not only the positions of characters to be supplied or edited but the range of character width that receives the effects of those characters, by detecting the cursor display size to a control circuit by a cursor position character width detecting circuit and changing said display size to the character width detected by a cursor display size control circuit. CONSTITUTION:The cursor display size corresponding to the character width and detected by a cursor position character width detecting circuit 8 is indicated by a cursor display size control circuit 9. Then a cursor of a designated size is displayed at the position of a cursor poition register 7 by a display device 5 via a display controller 6. The information on both position and size of the cursor are delivered by the outputs of the register 7 and the circuit 8. Thus a desired cursor pattern is obtained easily. Furthermore a function equivalent to the circuit 9 is secured by setting a switching mode of cursor display size to the controller 6 of a character display.
