An energy absorber is described which in its simplest embodiment is a pair of shear dampers mounted back to back on a common axis. Each shear damper has a central core (28) of damping material, such as lead, confined by a laminated structure of rigid plates (10, 12, 18), preferably separated by resilient material (24). The cores (28) and surrounding laminates are compressed between a pair of distal end plates (10, 12) and an end plate (18) common to both dampers. The common end plate (18) may be attached to one structural member and the distal end plates (10, 12) to another structural member to dampen relative motion between them. The absorber can dampen many kinds of motions caused by forces ranging from wind to earthquakes to vibrations in general such as vibrations in heavy machinery, rolling stock or penstocks.
|
