A cellulose-based tubular food casing, in particular a sausage casing, is described. A modified liquid smoke solution is applied to its inner and/or outer surface. The modified liquid smoke solution is a mixture which essentially contains unmodified aqueous liquid smoke solution and an alkaline neutralising agent and a synthetic and/or natural oil and a viscosity-increasing component and one or more emulsifier(s). The modified liquid smoke solution itself and the production and use of the casing are also described.
