PURPOSE: To provide an improved traction control system which overcomes the shortcomings of conventional systems without deteriorating transversal stability of a vehicle during acceleration on a splitμsurface. CONSTITUTION: A traction control system is provided for a vehicle having driven wheels 3, 4 driven via a limited slip differential 8. The amount of wheel spin WSL, WSR of each driven wheel 3, 4 is compared in comparators 23, 24 with a threshold T1 to detect excessive wheel spin. If excessive spin is detected for both driven wheels 3, 4, an engine management system 30 reduces the demand output of a vehicle engine 5. If excessive wheel spin is detected for only one of the driven wheels 3, 4 an engine output greater than the reduced demand output is demanded so as to allow the limited slip differential 8 to transfer torque to the other driven wheel.
