PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new optically active compound, good in switching characteristics, improved in low-temperature operation characteristics and effectively useful for turning a ferroelectric liquid crystal element reduced in temperature dependence of response speed to practical applications. SOLUTION: This optically active compound is represented by formula I [R1 is a halogen, CN or R2 ; R2 is H or an alkyl; R3 is an alkyl; A2 is 1,4- phenylene, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, etc.; A3 is a single bond, A2 , 1,4-cyclohexylene, etc.; A1 and A4 are each A2 , 1,4-cyclohexylene, etc.; X1 and X2 are each a single bond, COO, -C≡C, etc.; * indicates the optical activity; (*) indicates the optical activity or racemism; K and L are each 0 or 1], e.g. optically active 3-[4-(4- pentylcyclohexanecarbonyloxy)phenyl]-5-methyl-2-oxotetrahydro-1,3-oxaz ine. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by reacting a compound represented by formula II with a compound represented by formula III and passing through the resultant compound represented by formula IV. The liquid crystal composition contains 1-40wt.% compound represented by formula I. |
