PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the contact defect by the hooking of connecting ends at the time of switching the connection by melting and removing damaged part and executing rounding to make the part smooth and round, then removing the edge parts, etc., of the connecting ends. SOLUTION: After coated fiber ribbons (optical fibers) 100' (103') are cut by a cutter, the fiber ribbons are placed on a stationary table 101 in such a manner that the front ends protrude slightly from the stationary table 101. The front ends of the coated fiber ribbons (optical fibers) 100' (103') are melted and rounded by the arc discharge between two pieces of electrode rods 1A and 1B. If the front ends are rounded by the removal of the front end edges, there are no hooking parts even when the front end of the moving side optical fiber 103 descends obliquely and the lower end comes into contact with the upper end of the stationary side optical fiber 100 at the time of connecting and, therefore, the moving side optical fibers 103 descend smoothly and are housed into V grooves 104A. The front end working is preferably executed on both of the moving side and stationary side optical fibers or may be executed on one side as well. |
