RESONANT GRADIENT COILS FOR MRI

A gradient coil sub-system (68) for MRI, has a gradient coil (74) that has an inductance that is greater than twice the minimum inductance required for the given coil size. The use of such gradient coil (74) substantially reduces power consumption and increases performance. The use of a variable capacitor (72) in the gradient sub-system (68), is made possible by the reduced power requirements related to the gradient coil (74) having a higher inductance.
