The zone layout of a hard disc system is selected on the basis of the head and recording power. The position of each magnetic head is adjusted on the basis of measured head power and to identify a reference position and provides a reference value for the head power at that position. The mechanism is prepared by selecting the predefined zone layout, which is decided using the reference values. The error rate is measured and used to select a drive of different capacity when the conditions are not satisfied. Some of the process may be repeated with the mechanism having the smallest capacity.
