The invention provides a fixed wireless access system comprising a base station connected to a switching center, a PBX for bidirectional communication with a plurality of user stations, and a wireless trunk interface (WTI) for bidirectional wireless communication with the base station, and for bidirectional communication with the PBX over a trunk line. A transceiver at the WTI converts an air interface-compatible incoming signal into an input electrical signal, and converts an output electrical signal into an air interface-compatible outgoing signal. The WTI also comprise a trunk interface of re-formatting the input electrical signal into a trunk-compatible outgoing signal, and for re-formatting a trunk-compatible incoming signal into the output electrical signal. The invention is also directed to a method for establishing communication between a user station in a public switched telephone network and a telephone station behind a PBX over a wireless link. |
