The gas generator has a housing (3) with a diffusor sleeve and closure sleeve and includes a heat transfer restriction device so that the conduction of the heat produced by the combustion of a gas generating means is less to the side of the diffusor sleeve (1) than to the side of the closure sleeve (2). A cooling device (7) for cooling the combustion gas can be set in the housing whereby the heat transfer restriction device such as an interspace between cooling device and diffusor sleeve reduces or eliminates the heat conduction between same.
